El Fasher

El Fasher is the capital of North Darfur State and one of the oldest cities in western Sudan, with roots stretching back to the medieval Darfur Sultanate. The city's name — meaning "the royal court" in Arabic — reflects its centuries-long role as a seat of power, most notably under Sultan Ali Dinar, whose palace remains a key historical landmark. Situated approximately 750 km west of Khartoum on a semi-arid plateau, El Fasher serves as a cultural crossroads where Fur, Zaghawa, and Arab communities have traded and coexisted for generations. The economy is driven by agriculture — millet, groundnuts, and livestock — alongside government services and regional trade connecting Sudan to Chad and Libya. The University of El Fasher anchors the city's educational landscape.
