Nyala

Nyala is the capital of South Darfur State and the largest city in the entire Darfur region, located approximately 1,000 km southwest of Khartoum. As the primary commercial and trade hub for western Sudan, Nyala hosts one of the largest livestock markets in the Sahel, trading cattle, camels, sheep, and goats. The city is a collection and distribution point for agricultural products including millet, sorghum, sesame, and gum arabic, with active cross-border trade reaching Chad and the Central African Republic. Its population — among the largest in Sudan — reflects remarkable ethnic diversity, with Fur, Zaghawa, Masalit, Arab, and Fallata communities living side by side. Key residential areas include the city center, Hai al-Wadi, Hai al-Jabal, and newer expansion zones.
